README.TXT sftpd - SafeTP Server ------------------------------------------------------------ This software is a secure FTP server proxy for Windows NT/2000. Once installed, you can make secure connections to the sftpd proxy by installing the FREE SafeTP client proxy software, available at: http://safetp.cs.berkeley.edu/ Once the SafeTP client is installed on the client machine, you may use ANY Windows FTP client to connect to the sftpd server securely. See the webpage above for details. System Requirements: 1. Windows NT 4.0 or Windows 2000 2. a working "insecure" FTP daemon installed on the system SafeTP server requires that _some_ insecure, "legacy" FTP server be installed on the same system to act as the "host" FTPd (Because the server, like the client, is just a proxy - it adds security to an existing FTP daemon, which handles most of the "real" file work). There are many such FTPd programs available, both freely and commercially on the web (examples include wuFTPD, WarFTPD, Microsoft IIS, WSFTPD, Hummingbird ftpd, etc.) SafeTP server also requires an inetd daemon program to act as a "driver" for the sftpd package, starting it on demand as clients connect to your server. We recommend using our winetd software package, which is available for download from our webpage (and may also be included in this archive). The server is also compatible with the Inetd program that ships with Hummingbird Exceed 6.x, for the convience of those who may already have it installed. Installation instructions are contained in ../winetd/INSTALL.TXT (for winetd) and HCLINETD.TXT (for Hummingbird Inetd). The SafeTP client and server are copyright, SafeTP Development Group, Inc. If you've gotten this software DIRECTLY from the SafeTP webpage or the authors, then we've granted you ONE free "temporary" license to use the software. See LICENSE.TXT for the exact terms and details. (You're welcome to tell others about the server proxy, but we ask they get a copy directly from us). Note the client proxy for winNT/95/98 is freely available on the website given above and will remain that way. If you did not get this software DIRECTLY from SafeTP Development Group Inc., then this software is a pirated copy and furthermore may have been modified by any intermediate parties - destroy it immediately. To install sftpd, follow the instructions in INSTALL.TXT. This distribution also includes a stand-alone, secure windows FTP client (sftpc) which is written in the style of FTP.EXE and can initiate secure connections without the assistance of the SafeTP client. This can be handy for testing the installation of your server.
